A Living Memorial in Memory of a Loved One
When someone we love dies, finding the right way to honor their life—or the right way to support someone who is grieving—can be difficult. Sometimes there simply aren’t words that can make a loss easier.
A Little Saps Memorial & Sympathy Gift Tree offers something living and tangible. As the tree takes root and grows through the seasons, it can become a lasting tribute to a life, the memories shared, and a connection that remains.
A Meaningful Sympathy Gift
A Memorial & Sympathy Gift Tree can be sent:
In memory of a family member or friend
To someone grieving the loss of a loved one
Following a funeral or memorial service
On the anniversary of a loss
In remembrance of someone on a birthday or holiday
Whenever you want someone who is grieving to know you are thinking of them
There is no single right time to send a sympathy gift. Some trees are sent immediately following a loss, while others arrive in the weeks or months afterward, when the initial activity has quieted but grief remains.
Sending a living memorial tree is one way to continue showing up—to acknowledge the loss and remind someone that they and the person they loved have not been forgotten.
Personalize Your Memorial & Sympathy Gift Tree
Every Memorial & Sympathy Gift Tree includes your choice of a pre-printed memorial or sympathy gift tag and a keepsake card featuring your personal message.
Your message might share a memory, acknowledge the significance of the person who died, offer words of comfort, or simply let the recipient know you are thinking of them.
You don’t have to find perfect words. A simple message of care and presence can say a great deal.

Why Plant a Tree in Memory of Someone?
Planting a tree in memory of someone creates a living tribute that changes and grows with time.
As seasons pass and the tree becomes established, it can become part of a place connected to remembrance—a tree the recipient sees from the porch, passes in the yard, decorates at Christmas, or simply knows is there because someone they loved mattered.
For someone who is grieving, a memorial tree also offers an alternative to traditional sympathy flowers. Rather than lasting for only a short time, a living tree can be planted and cared for, becoming part of the landscape and a lasting reminder of a life remembered.
A Memorial Tree Selected for Their Growing Region
Little Saps are living evergreen trees selected to grow outdoors. Because different tree varieties thrive in different climates, our tree experts choose a variety suited to the recipient’s growing region. This gives each Little Sap the best opportunity to grow and thrive in its new home.
Have a favorite tree variety in mind? You can share your preference in the Order Notes at checkout, and we’ll accommodate your request when the variety is well suited to the recipient’s growing region.

Little Saps are living evergreen trees and need an outdoor home. Place your tree outside in a sunny or partially shaded location where it can experience fresh air, natural light, and seasonal changes.
If your tree arrived in a pot: Your Little Sap can remain in the pot it arrives in for about a year before it will need a larger container or a permanent home in the ground. Be sure to remove the plastic drainage plug from the bottom of the pot so excess water can drain freely.
Allow the soil to dry between waterings rather than keeping it constantly wet. During periods of regular rainfall, additional watering may not be necessary, while periods of drought may require more frequent watering. Your tree will also need more water during sunny, warm weather, when it loses more moisture through transpiration, and during periods of active growth. It will generally need less water during winter or extended periods of cool, cloudy weather.
If your tree arrived in a bag: Plant your sapling directly in the ground or transfer it to an outdoor container with proper drainage. If using a container, we recommend a well-draining soil mix:
Half potting soil, ideally with slow-release fertilizer
Half pine bark mulch
Whichever option you choose, avoid overwatering. Soil should be allowed to dry somewhat between waterings, and your tree should never sit in standing water.
