Your Roots Are Strong: Lessons from a Young Eastern White Pine
Today on my walk, I came across a young Eastern White Pine. Not quite as little as our Little Saps White Pines—this one was more of a teenager.
I stopped to admire its new growth. Growing along the edge of the forest, it received more sunlight than many of the trees around it. Even so, I was amazed by how much it had grown. The fresh spring growth was nearly as long as my arm.
You could clearly see the difference between the old and new growth. The new needles were bright green, emerging from soft yellow stems. The older needles were a deeper green with hints of silver, supported by a sturdy brown trunk. The tree looked healthy, confident, and full of life.
It was thriving.
Thinking About the First Little Saps
As I stood there, I found myself thinking about some of the very first Little Saps we ever sold.
Those little trees are probably not much younger than this White Pine now. I imagine them standing a little taller in backyards, gardens, and special places across the country.
Some were planted in memory of a loved one or a beloved pet. Others marked the arrival of a new baby, a new home, a wedding, or another important milestone. Many were sent simply as encouragement during a difficult season.
Each tree tells a story. And each one continues to grow long after the gift was received.
The First Little Saps Message
When I created Little Saps, one of the first things I worked on was the messages that would appear on our gift tags.
More than anything, I wanted our gift trees to offer hope and encouragement.
One of the very first tags I created simply said:
"Your Roots Are Strong."
I don't remember exactly where I first heard that phrase, but it stayed with me.
There's something comforting about the reminder that even when life feels uncertain, there are roots beneath the surface holding us steady.
A Tree Sent During a Difficult Season
Several years ago, I sent an Eastern Red Cedar to my cousin while she was hospitalized with COVID.
I chose that particular tree because I knew it would do well indoors for a short time before being planted outside. Attached to the tree was the "Your Roots Are Strong" gift tag.
Later, she told me how much that simple tree and message had encouraged her. It reminded her that she was stronger than she felt in that moment. And she didn’t feel so alone.
Sometimes we all need that reminder.
Maybe Someone You Know Needs to Hear It Today
Perhaps there's someone in your life who needs encouragement right now.
Maybe they're grieving a loss. Maybe they are facing a difficult diagnosis. Maybe they're navigating a major life transition or starting over.
Or perhaps they're simply carrying a burden you can't see.
A living gift tree won't solve every problem. But it can serve as a lasting reminder that growth is still possible, even in difficult seasons.
And sometimes that reminder means more than we realize.
Or Maybe the Reminder Is for You
Maybe you're the one who needs to hear it?
Maybe life feels overwhelming right now?
Maybe you're carrying more than anyone knows?
If so, consider spending a few moments outside. Plant something. Dig into the earth. Watch something grow.
Trees have a way of teaching us patience. They remind us that growth often happens quietly, beneath the surface, long before anyone else can see it.
And as you plant, remember:
Just like that young White Pine, your roots are strong!
