Celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day with Little Saps: Planting Hope for the Future

As we approach Earth Day and Arbor Day, it's crucial to reflect on the significance of these observances and the impact they have on our planet's health.

Earth Day

Earth Day originated in 1970 when millions of people gathered to protest environmental degradation and advocate for environmental protection measures. This event led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of key environmental laws in the United States. Since then, Earth Day has grown into a worldwide movement, with communities coming together to raise awareness and take action on environmental issues. Earth Day is now celebrated on April 22nd each year, marking a time for global reflection on environmental issues and the importance of conservation efforts.

Planet vs. Plastics

For Earth Day 2024 earthday.org is demanding a 60% reduction in the production of ALL plastics by 2040.

At Little Saps, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Our packing materials are 100% recyclable and reusable, and we're committed to reducing our use of harmful plastics. As part of our dedication to the environment, we support initiatives like the Planet vs. Plastics campaign, advocating for a reduction in plastic production to safeguard human and planetary health.

Arbor Day

Arbor Day traces its roots back to 1872 when J. Sterling Morton proposed a day dedicated to tree planting in Nebraska. The first Arbor Day saw over one million trees planted, and the tradition has since spread to other states and countries around the world. Today, Arbor Day is observed in all 50 states and numerous countries worldwide. While Arbor Day is typically commemorated on the last Friday in April, some states align their celebrations with optimal tree planting conditions. In North Carolina, for instance, the state Arbor Day falls on the first Friday following March 15th.

The Importance of Tree Planting

Both Earth Day and Arbor Day emphasize the critical role of trees in mitigating climate change, preserving biodiversity, and improving air and water quality. Trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helping to combat global warming. Additionally, trees provide habitat for countless species of plants and animals, contributing to ecosystem health and resilience.

  • Trees Clean Air: Globally, forests removed a third of fossil fuel emissions annually from 1990 to 2007, improving air quality.

  • Trees Boost Health: Community forests save one life yearly per 10 cities studied, with NYC's trees saving eight lives annually. Workers with tree views report lower stress.

  • Trees Provide Oxygen: A large tree supplies a day's oxygen for four people, with the Amazon Rainforest producing over 20% of the world's oxygen.

  • Trees Clean Water: Forested watersheds offer quality drinking water to 180 million Americans, with NYC's investment ensuring clean water and accolades.

  • Trees Cool: Shading surfaces, trees reduce temperatures by up to 45°F, with urban trees cooling cities by 10°F.

  • Trees Combat Climate Change: An acre of trees absorbs emissions from driving a car 26,000 miles, and each tree absorbs 48 pounds of carbon dioxide annually.

  • Trees Conserve Energy: Properly placed trees can cut heating and cooling costs by 25%, saving households and communities money.

  • Trees Aid Wildlife: Trees provide vital habitat for over 80 wildlife species in British Columbia and essential species range for many animals.

To plant a tree is to believe in tomorrow.

Join Us in Planting Hope

At Little Saps, we're proud to partner with The Village of Algonquin in Illinois for the second year in a row to celebrate Arbor Day. Together, we're supplying plain seedlings to be planted by a local elementary school, fostering environmental stewardship and instilling a love of nature in the next generation.

This Arbor Day, you can make a difference by ordering your very own Little Saps seedling and taking part in our efforts to help the Earth. By planting a tree, you're not only beautifying your surroundings but also contributing to a healthier planet for future generations to enjoy.
